Music, at its most basic, should be fun, and I try to impart that to my students. Lessons with me involve jokes, fun music, and taking our music making to the extreme. In addition, I strive to teach music as a language; learning it both aurally and visually, developing an ear for music and self-evaluation while learning to read the notes on the page. In High School, my music practice skills carried over to my academic studies and I was able to graduate with Honors, a 4.00, and earn 14 scholarships to attend college to become a musicteacher. Since then, I have had the privilege ofteaching1000's of students, and mentoring several college students. I even took Teacher Cadets as a senior in high school and did a month long internship with a middle school band director where I learned for the first time how to direct a band. My parents are both teachers so I come from a background of educators. I have been teaching for the last 3 years as I was completing my degree at CU Boulder. Even though I am a jazz trombonist, I focus on finding music that students like, not that I personally want to play. I was then invited to move back to my college town of Brookings, South Dakota to be their middle school band director.
