We then set about drawing up a practice routine, specific to that student. The practice routine is a set of 3-5 exercises taken from my library music books that will each touch on an area or skill that the student needs to work on. The routine will end with a song or piece of music for the student to read and practice. The student will practice this routine daily and the following week the student and I will sit down and play through the routine together. Read More

For beginners, I start with a mixture of the Suzuki method and the Essential Elements book. I find that combining ear training while simultaneously developing the ability to read music only accelerates the learning process. Teaching adults of any level are all about assessing interests and goals. I find out where the interest in creativity lies in every individual and work on developing that so the lessons remain fun and fulfilling. Read More

I begain teaching as a band assistant in college. I would lead sectionals and work with students who where struggiling one on one. As I gained experiance my role and responsibly grew and I began to run rehearsals and plan for concerts. One aspect of lessons that I emphasise is musicality. Often I will ask my students to listen to the song that they are working on or watch the movie or tv show it comes from because it is important to hear and see the bigger picture. Read More

For three years I was a camp counselor in the La Honda Music Camp (Hayward, CA). As a counselor, I looked after 10-12 middle school-aged girls, oversaw brass sectionals, coached trombone, and assisted in the junior wind ensemble. In high school I used to coach my classmates in the trombone section. In my grad school years I began to teach beginning piano and trombone. My hope when teaching music is that the kids have a lot of fun learning their instrument, so I always encourage them to learn songs they'd like to sing/play along to. Read More

My teaching styles revolves around the student and his/her needs. But above all, I love to see the joy of music speak through the students own earned skill through hard work. Achieving goals, and succeeding is the platform for building confidence and gaining great joy from the learning and playing of music. All students will be required to learn scales, etudes, solos, and other repertoire to bolster his/her musical goals abilities; but beyond that, I open to what the student wants learn, and what he/she is able to bring to the table.
