My first job out of college was teaching at a charter school where I saw all the students in the school for 9 week periods. After basic musical skills have been developed I'll move on to more interesting solo pieces based on the interests and needs of the students. For beginning students I would begin with a basic introduction of the instrument and its history. I believe that each instrument has a story to tell! I use a basic book such as Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or whatever material the student's band director is using. Flexibility is the key.
