I love people and I love music. My gift is teaching, and I think about it all the time. It gives me great joy to share what I have with you. I teach all aspects of brass playing: air control, embouchure development, articulation, tone, range, and musical interpretation of all styles. I teach a complete understanding of the guitar fretboard. I incorporate music theory and an understanding of chord structure in all lessons, and for all instruments that I play and teach. Read More

I am currently an active freelancer in the Chicago area as a teacher and performer. I have performed with several orchestras in the past, including the Spokane Symphony Orchestra, National Repertory Orchestra, Brevard Music Center Orchestra, Masterworks Festival Orchestra, and the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra. I have also performed quite extensively in chamber ensembles. Most recently, I performed in the Masterworks Honors Chamber Recital in the summer of 2016 with my brass quintet there. Read More

Ever since high school, I have enjoyed teaching other students. In college, I would travel to nearby schools to tutor middle and high school instrumental students. My first job out of college was teaching at a charter school where I saw all the students in the school for 9 week periods. We established an after school band where private lessons were the main form of growth. In my next job, I taught students from beginning, in sixth grade, through their senior year of high school. I create a hands on curriculum based on the students musical proficiency. Alongside this structured lesson plan, every student will receive training on proper practicing techniques which help build their sense of guidance, responsibility, and structure. Students will also receive training for embouchure and tone development as well as warm up etudes that cater to the students skill level. Music theory and terms will be infused within the lesson plans to ensure my student's proper use of signs and symbols. Read More

Teaching and learning is a two way street where the teacher learns and the learner can teach, we accomplish more working together. Each student learns and progrresses at a different rate. My teaching is catered to the student's needs and wants within my own style of encouragement and positive affirmation. We will move at the pace that is correct for each person and through goal setting and recognition of improvement create a fun skill. Read More

With young beginner students, I start with either the Essential Elements books for wind instruments or the Faber method for piano. After basic musical skills have been developed I'll move on to more interesting solo pieces based on the interests and needs of the students. With adults, I tend to talk to them a little more specifically about what their musical goals and influences are and help them to achieve them in their playing. Read More

For beginning students I would begin with a basic introduction of the instrument and its history. I believe that each instrument has a story to tell! I use a basic book such as Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or whatever material the student's band director is using. Flexibility is the key. Playing an instrument should be fun and that is certainly a goal for students of all ages. Practice is the key to success for beginners or more advanced players. Read More
