Teaching is a joy. The music is a gift and it is a blessing to share it with others. I enjoy seeing students learn and pick up music right in front of my eyes. Teaching is a learning experience for myself as well. I enjoy working with others and use my skills/experience to inspire others. I push students hard but also give rewards and bring a feeling of fun into lessons since music is supposed to be enjoyable. Read More

I have taught both middle school and high school band where I have worked with students on a variety of instruments at many different levels. I've found that students always are capable of more than they believe. Encouraging regular practice and finding music that makes the students want to practice is most important. If a student isn't enjoying their lesson, I'm not doing my job! I am always finding ways to keep my students motivated to learn. Read More

Taking the time to understand my students, their ability to retain information, and execute, as well as their interests, goals and desires musically, is vital to my success as an instructor. While I use many of the collection of standard method books, I find creating unique exercises designed to target weaker areas in a particular persons playing to be more efficient, in cases, accelerating their grasp of fundamentals. Throughout ones progression, repertoire is introduced to reinforce techniques in a musical fashion. Read More

I grew up in Gillette Wyoming playing Euphonium and Trombone, also achieving 4 years in the all state band. From there, I went to the University of North Texas, and my world grew so much larger. As the largest Euphonium studio in the world, I was blown out of the water at the ability level of the players around me. I achieved both a Bachelors and a Masters degree in Euphonium performance. For beginning students, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has a grasp on the fundamentals of performance, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital or NYSSMA solo. After the student moves on from basic method books, I introduce more trombone-specific books such as Arban's Trombone Method Book and Rochut's Melodious Etudes for trombone. For adults, I like to find out what kind of music they want to play and plan my lesson accordingly to skill level. Read More

Students will always start with fundamentals to ensure a steady foundation. The exact materials may vary, but I usually create the specific exercises that students need to work on week to week. Each part of their individual practice session will have an 'aim' for students to focus on while they are playing. By teaching thoughtful practice, students can avoid wasted practice time and find success at more frequent intervals. Songs, solos, or etudes will be added in on a regular basis and focus on a technique the student is currently working on. Read More
