I also have found that on top of strong fundamentals and good practice and performance habits, students find more pleasure in music when introduced to a variety of styles of music. Introducing students to classical, jazz, blues, and even modern music allows students to find even more enjoyment in the instrument they play. I encourage my students to perform in recitals and showcase the progress they have made in order to stay motivated. Read More

I look to be sure that each student enjoys the material as well as music as a whole. Therefore, each student should be able to progress at their own pace. As a student progresses, I do have an admittedly bad habit of speeding up material a bit too much, so I encourage all students to let me know when something is too much for them. As i look to select material, I like to do a 5 minute test run of the piece to ensure that students enjoy the material before assigning it. Read More

I help each student not only meet their goals on their instrument, but also to meet their goals in life. If a student is interested in music, I strive to help them discover their big "Why?". Why do they play their instrument, and what is their reason for making music. I believe in coach-based teaching. In other words, the student is on their journey to discover how to achieve their goals, and I am a coach to guide them on their way. Read More

For beginning students, I typically use Essential Elements or Standard of Excellence (whichever they are not using in school if any). I use these series until a student has progressed enough at the fundamentals of playing that specific functions can be addressed. At that point, I will begin to split instruction into flow studies, flexibility, tone, air movement, and articulation, drawing from a variety of books created by some of the world's leading brass musicians. My instruction is tailored to the specific musical goals and needs of the individual student, however, a students progression is paced by the individual. A significant aspect of my teaching style is my understanding of the various ways in which people learn and the vast amount of tools I utilize to impart information. The balanced acknowledgement of a students strengths and weakness tends to encourage their desire to progress, while setting attainable goals can motivate that process to result continuously. For beginning students, I typically start with the Ed Sueta beginning trombone book (this is the book I learned from when I first started). Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. As a jazz musician, I can also instruct students on jazz improvisation, harmony, theory, composition, ear training, etc. No matter what the student is interested in, I will guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun. Each summer I volunteer at my local community music camp where I I teach a wide of variety of students who are touching an instrument for the very first time and students who simply want to improve on their skills. I tell students the same fundamental things that I think about while practicing which consists of regular practice and simply enjoying the music I’m playing. The first thing about learning an instrument is that it should be fun, it should never feel like a chore. Read More
