For beginning students, I start with a basic method book. Most often, they are enrolled in school band already and I am happy to use whatever method books their teacher uses. Otherwise, I start with the Rubank elementary method for trumpet and cornet. We incorporate music-making (simple songs and tunes) from the very beginning. I believe there is no "cookie cutter" method to teaching so I tailor my lessons specifically to each of my students. I have found that having a strong foundation in classical music sets the tone for musical excellence for all styles, regardless of age or musical maturity. From that perspective I like to start all of my students on The Arban's and Herbert L. Clarke Method books for trumpet. For beginning students who are children, I typically begin with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements; as well as other, more auditory practices that do not require a book. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce other solo repertoire pieces that I feel the student is ready for, and assist in musical execution for future recitals. My teaching experience dates back to my mid-high school days, where I would teach elementary and junior high students brass technique in one-on-one settings, help teach my junior high jazz band, and teach a combo that I put together myself. I have also, in the state of Iowa, played with a number groups including churches, rock bands, New Orleans style brass bands, British style brass bands, symphonic bands, symphony orchestras, chamber groups, and musical theater pit orchestras.
