I believe in helping students establish regular practice habits, with consistent warmup exercises and strong fundamentals. I also find that combining assigned music with music the student choose for themselves helps keep motivation levels high! I can teach many instruments that I have taught myself how to play well and efficiently. I play in many bands and I am always learning new styles of music. My best instruments are Piano, Bass, Drums, Ukulele, Guitar, Percussion, Harmonica, Recorder, Tin Whistle, Mandolin and also Trumpet. My secondary instruments are everything else. I can fool around on Violin, Cello, Banjo and Trombone as an amateur. I could blow into a Saxophone, Flute, Clarinet, French Horn and probably anything else I can get my hands on, but I would not feel comfortable teaching them yet because I don't have enough time in the world to learn them and figure out how to play them myself and get as good as I can on those instruments. Since I began learning piano, my cousins would ask me to show them what I had learned in my latest lesson and attempt to teach them. Even then I enjoyed the experience of sharing and teaching music. When I was 15 I began teaching guitar lessons to a small group of students who attended service at the church my family attends. Daryl began playing flute at the age of 11, as part of a middle school band class. His band instructor noticed his innate talent, and began to prepare him for studies at the Music Advancement Program at the Juilliard School. During this two year program, Daryl studied flute with Jayn Rosenfeld, played in chamber ensembles and orchestra, while also studying music history, music theory, and ear training.
