Instruments: Trumpet

With consistent practice on both fundamentals and repertoire, I believe that anybody can learn how to play an instrument. Learning an instrument is like building your dream house. You start start by building a strong foundation through fundamentals and then by working over a period of time, your dream house will start to become a reality. My goal as a teacher is to help each of my students understand what they need to do to practice on their own in order to see improvement over time. Read More

I have been a music educator in the public schools for over 40 years having taught in Austin, Texas and currently in Fort Worth, Texas. Many of my students have gone to play their instruments in college bands throughout the state. Several former students are currently teaching music at the secondary and college level. I do not approach my teaching to focus on a student's future as a musician. All make individual choices on musical endeavors. Read More

I started teaching guitar lessons in 1999 (20 years this year!) Since those days I've gotten two degrees and taught at colleges, and private institutions, as well as high school and middle schools. I've found that combining textbook music instruction along with learning to play some of the music the student is listening to keeps them growing and engaged. Most importantly it makes learning music fun! I love jazz and I encourage efforts of composition and improvisation to help the student take ownership of the notes they're learning. Read More

Instruments: Trumpet Recorder French Horn

In general and for any subject or instrument that I teach It is very important since the beginning to make an evaluation of skills and that provide me the way to do a individual learning project. Evaluation use to be continuously and in every class I take note about contents, progress and observations. My program pretends in every cases to form a professional musician although if students just want to strengthen any technical or musical aspect, learn an specific music style or musical work there will be accepted as well. For beginner students, I often use the Essential Elements series, or a similar book. Work on fundamentals should be regular. Some of the books I like to use for this are: Clarke, Schlossberg, Bai Lin, Irons, Stamp, and more. Solos and etude books are important to work out of as well. Early etude books include Getchell and Small, and later etude books include Bousquet, Longinotti, Brandt, and Charlier. The Arban's book is also something trumpeters and brass players should be familiar with. Read More
