As an elementary school student I performed in regionally recognized handbell, soprano recorder, and choir ensembles and I am a strong advocate of these types of ensembles at the elementary level. For beginner students, I often use the Essential Elements series, or a similar book. Work on fundamentals should be regular. Some of the books I like to use for this are: Clarke, Schlossberg, Bai Lin, Irons, Stamp, and more. Solos and etude books are important to work out of as well. Early etude books include Getchell and Small, and later etude books include Bousquet, Longinotti, Brandt, and Charlier. I started teaching lessons in college. I began teaching lessons 6 years ago, and have always taught in-home lessons. I believe that teaching in the home will help my students be more comfortable practicing at home. I prefer the one on one setting that teaching lessons gives you over the large ensemble setting. I believe it gives more opportunity to grow as a player. I work with students of all ages, because I believe everyone that has a drive to get better deserves the opportunity to study with someone who will push them in that direction. Read More
