In teaching young students, I find most success in a repeat-after-me style. It is easiest for students to understand how to create something when supplied with a quality example to mimic. I teach my students the importance of musicality and expression alongside the technical aspects of playing their instrument. If a student is looking to study something particular, such as preparing a solo for a competition, I not only help them work on the piece, but I aim to supply them with successful practice methods as well. Currently I am a band director in the Pueblo, Colorado area but have lived all over the United States and played trumpet extensively for over 2 decades. I was trained as a trumpet player at DePaul University, UAB, and most recently at the University of Alabama, and also have experience composing and arranging music. I first started teaching and helping run brass sectionals at some local schools in 2004, but did not start teaching regualarly until I completed my degree in 2011. I find that young musicians make the most progress when playing for and with other people. I aim to make lessons fun and engaging and put a strong emphasis on playing duets. I also encourage students to enter competitions and play recitals. I have found competitions and recitals motivate students both before and after the event. Read More
