Sound is the most important aspect of trumpet playing, and the good thing is you can practice pretty much anything and still focus on your sound. For beginners I usually supplement their beginner band book with some simple drills from Schlossberg's Daily Drills or some I wrote myself. I strive to have a positive and friendly relationship with students. Respect of eachother is also important. I teach each student uniquely and do not stick to a "cookie cutter" approach. Everyone has unique physiology and strengths and weaknesses, so each person should be taught according to their specific characteristics. I was self taught. I was first chair, in Amarillo High School band, and did solo and ensemble competitions earning a one in rating many times. I also was a part of Amarillo Schools Region bands and orchestras, and made it to area. My Senior year, I moved to Plano, and became a part I also marched 4 years on Band 1 side of the trumpet rank at Texas Tech University. I started teaching guitar lessons in 1999 (20 years this year!) Since those days I've gotten two degrees and taught at colleges, and private institutions, as well as high school and middle schools.
