At the very beginning level I would start with fundamentals from whatever book I feel would be best for the student depending on their age and knowledge. Beforehand I definitely will need to asses their knowledge so I can do so accordingly. I however will now focus on solely fundamentals and will try to include in songs that the student would like to learn as long as it is in the bounds of reality, the lessons I provide are only part of the equation and the real work is what is put in after the lesson. For beginning students who are just picking up the horn, we focus on the very basics on how to make noises on it. Once they understand how it make sounds, we slow work on refining and controlling so we can actually learn to play! Older and more experienced students will learn how to make Music, not just playing the notes on the page. A lot of time goes into understanding musicality, so we will often listen to recordings, play together to find different way to express musical ideas, and take time to really understand and comprehend different music genres. For single lessons, I perform an inventory of skills, supplementary lesson, and assessment for an improvement plan. I select technique and training material in conjunction with any programs in which the student is currently participating (i.e. school band programs, other instruction, etc.). If the student already has a grasp on the fundamentals, my focus goes to exercises that extend range, fine-tune timbral sound, build technical flexibility, and expand dynamic range. The repertoire is typically "suggested" by me (to reinforce learning objectives) but is not "officially picked" without the approval and enthusiasm of the student.
