I have even taught adults in their fifties and sixties who want to pick up their instrument after a long absence. I take great pride in being a teacher, and few things bring me more joy than seeing a student succeed or say "Oh, now I get it!" in a music lesson. Whether I'm preparing a student for a college audition, a recital, or even just to play "Mary Had a Little Lamb" for mom and dad, every student is important to me, and every lesson is tailored to each individual students' needs. As a strong advocate of new music, I have actively participated in numerous student composer concerts that have presented new and viable works from USF's esteemed composition program. I have also participated in the Apple Hill Chamber Music Festival (2012 and 2013) and the annual Tennessee Cello Workshop (2009). I was the principal cellist of the 2009 National Philharmonic Summer String Institute under the direction of maestro Piotr Gajewski and I was recently the Assistant Principal of the University of South Florida Symphony Orchestra. For violin, viola, cello and bass, I teach the Suzuki method. The Suzuki method is based strongly on memory and takes a systematic approach to introducing music of increasing difficulty. For classical guitar, I start off with the Frederick Noad system, "Solo Guitar Playing", and scales. As skill level increases, I assign more etudes and standard guitar repertoire. For acoustic guitar, I teach almost exclusively finger-picking. I teach the same high standard skills for acoustic guitar that I teach for classical, but concentrate on masterpieces of the repertoire. Read More

I am able to mention several examples of community development because I have been a member for more than thirty years of El Sistema in Venezuela. It has shown to the world to be one of the most important educational projects that utilizes music for social, familiar and community development. It is also important to mention notable projects in Colombia to which I have participated as a guest teacher and speaker, these are: Fundación Batuta, Tocar y Luchar, Red the Orquestas de Medellín, in Brazil, in USA- El Sistema USA in Boston, Puerto Rico 100*35 Program, Argentina. I begin with developing sheet music literacy in my students right off the bat if they have no experience in reading music. I believe music literacy is one of the most important aspects of learning an instrument. I've always said, "not being able to read sheet music is like trying to be a writer who can't read, it makes no sense". I also begin with teaching proper form. Meaning how to hold the instrument and how to use proper technique. Read More

What really fueled my fire was a two week camp in Potsdam, New York in 2007 where I was given the chance to stay in a college dorm, meet professors, work with graduate students, and play challenging music in the selected ensembles. On Long Island I was the second violin section leader of the Bay Area Community Orchestra and a 1st violin, and violist for the Suffolk County Community College Orchestra. Read More

Four years ago I had my first experience as a teacher in Cuba. It was with only 3 students in an Elementary school. I have to tell that in the beginning I was so nervous because each student was different, had different goals, styles and ability to learn. I develop during my classes with my first students the ability to have patient with my students and to make them feel that in my class they can have fun and also learn something different each class.
