Born in Washington D.C., I trained on violin in the Arlington area, starting with Suzuki and moving to more traditional classical studies, eventually composing and playing my own compositions starting in my early teens. I completed my bachelor's degree with a major in violin performance at Indiana University Bloomington in December 2022. Beginner: Learning the violin can be an adventure! From the first moment holding the violin, the student develops a natural way of holding the instrument and develops auditory skills that nurture a good musical foundation. Methods such as Suzuki as well as other traditional methods are used in an approach customized to each student. Intermediate: Once the student has a good foundation, the focus is on further developing a coordinated way of physically relating to the violin, developing critical listening skills, problem-solving, self-monitoring, building repertoire, growing an ability to express oneself on the violin, and learning to play with others in an ensemble. My approach to teaching is to come in with a detailed plan I'm ready to throw out the window. Music should be fun! Sometimes we have to work hard to make sure it is fun for the long run, but work doesn't need to be unenjoyable. For the kids and kids at heart, I incorporate movement games and Orff instruments. I have a customized approach to instruction that keeps pace with the student's skill level and ability. Goal setting is an important activity that I use to sustain interest and encouragement. For example, we may decide together that we will attempt to master a particular inspiring piece of music by a specific date. Naturally, the date will be reset depending upon the student's progress. I like to incorporate contemporary music into the lesson so that my students can see that the violin can be used widely in various musical genre. Read More

I try to cater to the each student's particular needs. For beginning students that are children I typically start with the Essential Elements Strings Book 1 in combination with Suzuki first book. As every student progresses at a different pace, I adjust my teaching curriculum accordingly. Having that in mind, I decide on the next step, usually some solo repertoire, as well as some more etudes and scales.  For adults, I tend to go with what they are particularly interested in, as well as incorporating learning basic music reading and playing skills. My teaching experience dates back to my grad school years, as I began teaching private lessons part time in 1995. Since then, I have been teaching more and more students both privately and in school setting. I have taught in Park School, The Friends School in Baltimore area, and Towson University preparatory music department, and currently I'm a faculty in McDonogh School Private Music department. I also run studio recitals yearly and help my students rehearsing with the pianists to make their music complete and bring them up to their fullest performance level. Read More
