The best thing I can give any student from a lesson is a love of music, and a desire to keep improving. I focus my energy on the positive aspects of a students playing while offering feedback to improve their playing abilities even more, while providing a bag of tools for continuous improvement they can use their entire life. In the start of lessons, with any student, we focus on how to pull a beautiful sound from the instrument, and then start working on the more technical details. Read More

I believe in positive affirmation and goal setting. My goal with all students is that they enjoy learning, become self-motivated to practice, and consider their musical abilities as a gift which they can choose to share with others whenever they feel comfortable to do so. I have experience using a variety of method books and can easily recommend appropriate materials. I also encourage students to share with me and allow me to help them learn their favorite music, as well, even if that involves writing it out with or for them. Read More

I have been fortunate to have experienced a long and multifaceted journey in music: from performing to conducting and orchestra, from teaching to defending my PhD, from creating a music department to managing it. Nothing gives me greater joy than seeing the improvement in the skills and ability to enjoy music in students of all levels. My varied music and career experience gave me the experience and wisdom to guide my students to better themselves, be it musically, professionally or personally. Read More

Having fun is the most important thing in my studio! This is achieved through setting and attaining specific goals and keeping a student engaged with the decision making process of what they want to play. It takes a couple of lessons for me to get to know how the student learns but once I do, I will adapt my teaching style to how a student learns best while still encouraging them to learn in different and new ways. I collaborate with my students to determine their needs and goals. When starting out with beginners, I usually start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements for Strings. I then transition to Suzuki repertoire. I also include music individual to each student based on their interests. My methods are flexible and designed to draw out the strengths of each student. I like to have open communication with my students, and I like to get feedback from my students about where they are at so I can meet them there. Read More
