I have consistently been teaching students in my home for the past 7 years and never want to stop! My goal with each student is to teach the fundamentals of the violin/viola, and especially how to practice in an organized way. I want my students to gain their own love for the instrument and be inspired daily by music. My students are required to practice daily and perform often. Some of my earliest memories are from learning how to read music. I've been involved in piano and violin for most of my life, beginning both early in elementary school. I studied privately for roughly ten years under various instructors while in school. My instruction consisted mostly of solo performance pieces, but I was fortunate to be able to enjoy many years in the Idaho Falls Youth Symphony as well as experience the Idaho All-State Orchestra and the Teton Chamber Orchestra. For beginning students, I like the Suzuki method for violin. I've been trained in that method. I'm also very flexible and like to incorporate other styles into our lessons. I believe that students develop skills quickly when they have a good understanding of hand position, note reading and ear training. I began teaching lessons at age 14 to young neighborhood beginners. As I progressed through the years, I expanded my range of student ability from beginner to upper intermediate, and from ages 6 to... well, older than me and I'm now 60! I have taught hundreds of students and enjoyed every one of them. When first taking private viola lessons I studied Wohfahrt Etudes. Playing 1-2 level appropriate pieces is a great amount. Repertoire from the Suzuki books are fundamental stepping stones into becoming a better musician. I always enjoyed when I got to play a piece that I chose out myself, so I want to allow my students to find a piece of music on their own that they would love to play. Read More
