Most importantly, learning violin should be fun. In my lessons, my students will find a variety of rhythm games and activities. I am not just teaching violin, but music as a whole. I feel that music appreciation needs to be built into violin lessons. I will share pop and classical music with students, show them live performance videos, and encourage them to experiment with their own natural abilities. I am a big communicator when teaching beginning students. Read More

With all my students, I like to first figure out their goals and tailor our lessons to match each individuals aspirations. For beginners, I typically like to start with the 24 Italian Arias and/or light musical theater pieces to establish a good technical foundation and gradually move on to more advanced repertoire. Music is deeply personal; one must get to know each student's own personality, interests, and connections to music. Early on (both in the teaching relationship and in each lesson) one must assess where the student is, as to technical and musical growth, and with the music at hand. Then one finds, models, explains and encourages the next steps the student can achieve. Clear guidance and dialogue about what will happen outside the studio (listening, practice, rehearsal, performance) helps turn the weekly cycle of lessons into an upward spiral of progress, achievement, and reward.
