I focus first on fundamentals of sound and technique to build a foundation for the student then work on scales and repertoire to get them playing music. I really covered this in the above information,so continuing in more detail,it really depends on each individual student,their level of ability and age that determine the course of study.It also depends on the instrument.Some instruments like piano,violin or viola,books are more practical because the music is notated.With most fretted instruments,music is written in tableture which was originally used for the lute and brought back i think in the 1970s.Its easier than reading music and is more practical for those instruments. For beginner students, I start with Hal Leonard's "Essential Elements for Strings" Book 1. This book is not only great for learning the fundamentals of the instrument (such as the names of the parts of the instrument, how to hold the instrument, etc.) but it also the best book I have found to teach beginning students how to read music on the violin and viola. For more advanced students, I like to stick with a formula of three things: scales (two-three octaves), an etude (a piece used to focus on a specific technique), and solo repertoire. Read More
