For beginner students, i typically like to work with the tried and true Suzuki books, as well as theory practice with Essential Elements for violin, and the Faber books for pianists. I will begin to introduce solo work as skills build, but we will always be working on something that the student genuinely is interested in. While I have taught violin lessons since 2010, my most recent passion for teaching occurred when I became an Adjunct Professor of Violin at New York University from 2016-2018. I held this position for two years while I was simultaneously completing my Masters degree, and maintained a studio of 10 students each semester. I use a number of resources to teach students concepts in musical performance. This includes online resources and method books that enhance fundamentals and technique. I do believe that understanding of music theory is necessary to advance beyond the intermediate level, and this system has assisted in training many students over the years. Moreover, now I have progressed into teaching high school students who plays viola in more advanced level such as trying to audition for texas all state orchestra, state solo and ensemble, assigned etudes, book exercises, and scales. I encourage students to be open with me if they have any problems in playing their violin/viola, feeling overwhelmed with music, and/or feeling uncomfortable/shy when playing their instrument. It is very important to address these situations in order to make sure the student feels comfortable playing the violin/viola, knows how to overcome their obstacles, and most of all, feeling confident and passionate. For beginning students, I always start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. I've found this book to be the best at introducing the instrument and reading the music. I may or may not continue teaching out of the books (there's 3), but that depends on the student. By book 2 or 3 I usually begin introducing Suzuki, as there are many solo pieces for them.
