There is no point in learning what to do if you don't know why you are doing it, so teaching "the why" of every exercise is very important to me. The idea is to eventually teach myself out of a job! While I provide a general syllabus to each student, I prefer to customize my lesson plans to the individual, first finding out what their goals are and then deciding what will help us achieve them. I have helped people both young and old learn how to play bass guitar and perform with any band and in any style of music through private instruction. I have been teaching beginning to intermediate piano for the past 2 years and I have the same approach to teaching piano as I do the bass guitar and that is to play the instrument the way it's meant to be played. I have only one requirement as a teacher and that is, you must practice! Read More

The dedication it takes to learn an instrument can help develop skills values that will benefit the student throughout life, regardless of profession. Therefore, I believe that the process of learning music is more important than any particular performance that we work toward, so I take a pragmatic approach to instruction. Of course, we look forward to recitals and concerts, because they give our rehearsals direction, but it should also be emphasized that our most rewarding musical experiences may happen in lessons or private practice. No single approach works with every student when teaching drums. There are simply too many styles and methods to choose from. But when working with beginners, I tend to focus mostly on developing a good internal sense of rhythm and good listening skills. Then if the student wishes, we may specialize in classical, jazz, rock, latin, or whatever style the student is interested in. There are many excelent published methods to choose from and I occasionally assign etudes and excersizes of my own. Read More

In 35 years of teaching, I've learned that everyone is different, and that is how it should be! The goals of teaching are the same for each student, but the process of achieving the goals is usually tailor made for each person. I love music, and it is always thrilling for me to hear progress as the weeks go by. I enjoy teaching because I feel I am working with the students to bring something good into their lives. Read More
