I encourage students to let me know which pieces they especially enjoy learning. I find that in many cases, even young beginners gravitate towards the classics and well-composed music. As a female composer, I am passionate about incorporating improvising and composing into my teaching, not only because it accelerates musical fluency and sensitivity, but because many individuals with innate creative talent do not explore this area because they don't think they are capable of creating music themselves. I believe singing is a full body experience and focus on maintaining a healthy body and mind. My lessons are student led. At the first lesson I will ask questions about the students goals and cater the lessons to the individuals needs and desires. Each of us as individuals are different; therefore each of us as musicians are also different. Therefore, I enjoy crafting a learning environment with each new student that meets them where they are and challenges them to grow in all areas of music. We need to develop technique, deepen expressive gestures, focus on phrasing and attention to musical detail and, of course, have fun! Guitar: For children, I begin with simple folk songs to teach them chords and strums. From there, we progress to picking patterns. For teens and adults, I use both folk songs and easy pop music. For both age groups, I encourage note reading and some classical work. For classical guitar, I use technique books by Aaron Shearer.
