Instruments: Piano Voice

Assessment is the task during the first lesson. I must determine the student's voice type, and what style of music the student would like to pursue. If a boy's voice hasn't yet changed, I'll assess whether he is an alto or soprano. I'm a keen believer in teaching one to sightread and encouraging one to improvise with his/her instrument! A voice lesson to me to should be easygoing and open, while having a task to accomplish. I encourage my students to enter my studio with an open mind and feel free to explore artistically. We set goals together and progress vocally with each song. I have an extensive library of music as well which my students are free to use to find new material. The first two things that I teach in my studio is posture and breathing. I analyze the posture of the singer and find several yoga postures that can help the student to relax some tension and to be more comfortable. I help students to be more aware of how the breath works in their bodies by using several repeating breath exercises and yoga posture. My vocal technique is based on YogaVoice, meaning that I used Yoga principles combined with Vocal Technique exeecises to sing more organic and to achieve an authentic relaxed voice. Read More

It is not about improving quickly but really understanding and loving what they are doing. I try to find ways to inspire my students so that the whole lesson is productive and fun. For young and/or beginner vocalists, I focus on classical fundamentals, as they are the roots for success in all genres. This means working on breath support and learning about vowel placement. The next step would then be developing and strengthening the singers vocal range and repertoire. For adults and/or more experienced vocalists, I focus on what the student is trying to accomplish and help them move towards their goals. Read More
