I taught group music courses for children ages 4-12 in a seasonal camp for 2 years, and I found out that combining body movements not only helps improve children's singing technique and posture but also makes students enjoy and relax more. I move at a very quick pace, but I have my students set their own goals. While I will select the literature for the student, I want them to feel successful when they are working with me. I want students to be confident and successful, so I will do anything in my power to help them learn good technique and practice habits. For my string students, I typically use Hal Leonard's Essential Elements at first, and then I introduce the Suzuki Method for solo repertoire once they have progressed on their instruments. For my vocal students, I find what type of music my student is interested in, and I then recommend a voice book that we will pick repertoire from. For my piano students, I use the Piano Adventures series, which includes the fundamentals as well as solo repertoire. Read More

Mistakes are how every singer improves! With older students, I want to help students learn to recognize their own mistakes and areas they can improve on. I will always be ready to help them on trouble areas or encourage them when they get it right, but I want them to learn how to recognize it on their own so they can develop outside of a lesson! This comes from having them identify: where something didn't go as planned, why didn't it, and what can they do to improve it the next time. Read More

I like to create very clear imagery that builds over time. The voice is not something we can see or touch, so I often joke that singing is about learning Jedi mind tricks that help us achieve a healthy technique. I like to incorporate theory/musicianship and some piano into my lessons to create a well rounded understanding of singing as a musician. I use my students' natural strengths to help them understand the aspects of music that come less naturally to them.
