I graduated from Kansas State University in 2018 with a Bachelor's Degree in Vocal Performance and a minor in Theatre. Over the past 5 years I have had 7 beginner piano students and 10 voice students of varying levels. I have taught ages 5-10 for piano and 11-20 for voice. I currently teach online via FaceTime/Zoom, am available to go to students homes or host them in my studio. When I first started teaching in college I used standardized materials and found it was helpful but inadequate to teach everything my students needed. So I began to explore other curriculum and attend the NAMM conventions and talk with other instructors. I saw there was a need for more expanded materials and started writing my own. For adults, I take an assessment of what they want to learn and the goals they want to achieve musically. What I've found is in a lot of cases, adults want to learn how to sing a certain song, fix a pressing issue with their voice, or they just want to discover the joy of developing their ability to play. I am a strong believer in students taking charge of their learning, so I like to have my students choose a piece of music of their choice, and I will pick another piece of music that I believe suits their voice. My teaching experience dates back to my time at Washburn University, where I have taught several students. Now I teach at Missouri State University as a part of my assistantship. I encourage regular practice and motivation for students to see results. I have found that allowing students to express how they feel about the songs they sing really helps them become better performers. Also, I encourage watching masterclasses over their songs they have and reading up on the opera or show their song is in. Read More
