Instruments: Voice
For beginning students who are new to music, I typically like to start with learning notes, note names, and rhythms. I like to incorporate rhythmic exercises and other fun activities to get them to enjoy what they are learning. For adults, I try to find out how much the student knows about music and see what their interests are. Based on what the student knows, I guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging, fun, and knowledgable. Read More
Instruments: Piano Voice
For piano students just starting out, I like Alfred’s basic piano library, and the Bastien piano basics. There are several other piano courses I’m excited to try as well. For both piano and voice students, I like to include a book of tunes with which the student is familiar: movie tunes, Disney songs, etc. For older students, I will focus a little more on the different time periods of music and help them to gain an appreciation for each. I have been teaching privately for the past 4 years, and established my personal virtual studio 3 years ago. I began to take on students after my master's degree, and in that time I have learned a great deal about using a completely individual approach per each student's needs. I am experienced in a wide variety of teaching scenarios: training the earliest beginner (of all ages!), preparing students for college auditions, and being a coach for professionals. Read More

Fundamentals remain the same at every level of expertise, and every age: whether we're referring to low breath support in singing, high wrist position at the piano, or how to use both amp tweaking and finger technique together to minimize 'clicking' in the bass guitar sound. These and all fundamentals which make up the foundation of any instrumental expression of music (including the voice, and especially the voice) do not change. Read More

My teaching experience began when I was in grad school, where I taught a few students at a local high school. Since moving to the KC area eight years ago, I have been consistently teaching and gradually building my private studio, which now has over 20 students! I love working with young singers (specifically grades 8-12) and helping them find the potential in their voices. I have encountered the full range of ability levels, from very experienced (had lessons before, sung multiple solos in school choir, had lead roles in musicals, etc.) to complete novice (no lessons, no choir experience). My overall approach to lessons is the same, regardless of ability level: consistent improvement from week to week using vocal exercises, songs, and an exploration of breath and the physicality of singing. I am a very caring and passionate instructor who wants to bring the best out of my students. I graduated from College of the Ozarks with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Theater Performance. I am a part of a music group called, "And He Walks With Me" and I have the immense privilege of traveling with the group across the country, spreading the message of Christ's love and mercy. For beginner's, I do typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements books. For intermediate, I'll evaluate what materials they've used thus far in their lessons and go from there. If someone is familiar with a set of books in a positive way, there's no reason to change the books they're using. I do believe, however, there is profit in a variety of repertoire, so a diverse lesson is key. I have learned from experience that simply learning one genre (classical, jazz, showtunes) is less desirable than having a familiar ear to multiple styles. Read More
