I love when my students play songs they love, so I often make my own arrangements of those songs to make them approachable for the student. For my voice students, I also follow a similar method. We work on breathing, alexander technique, body awareness, yoga, music theory, solfege and acting. We develop healthy vocal habits and explore different vocal methods depending on student interests. For piano, I typically use Bastien and/ or Hal Leonard. Following this, we'll engage in some singing with scale degrees (numbers) i.e. 1, 1-2-1, 1-2-3-2-1 etc. It's another fun way to work on aural skills. I'll then proceed to take them through some basic foundation building technical scales and repertoire. For Intermediate students, the breathing and technical work is more advanced, I include aural studies like intervals signing and recognition and perhaps modes of major scale then we'll sing through their chosen repertoire. I also believe in the collaboration of teacher and student. I am always asking students opinions or reactions on what we work on in the lesson.
