I've been working with children long before I chose my major and started college. Singing was always a big part of my "play". I studied elementary education but even when I was in the general classroom I used music. I enjoyed making up songs to help different skills and ideas stick. My method of working with the voice is to first get a sense of what the student's goals are. These include both vocal goals and career/performance goals. We will then work together to form a plan to achieve them. This will include exercises tailored directly to the student's vocal needs and desires and guiding the student to repertoire that will both be fun for them to sing and will teach them more about the concepts we are working on. In the first lesson, I listen very carefully to what the student wants to achieve and how they feel about the way they sing. Then, I begin my strategy of how to devise a skills building foundation based on their needs. After a few exercises, I can understand how quickly they can adapt and try new techniques.
