At the beginng of the first lesson I like to ask my student about their musical experience, interest and if they have any over arching goals, and after that I warm them up and teach them part of a simple song either from a popular musical or (for my younger students) Disney song in order to hear the maturity, tonality, and range they are starting with. For absolute beginner's I will spend the first few lessons just working on getting a sound out of the instrument and when ready, playing some easily recognized songs (like nursery rhymes), by ear to develop aural skills from the very start. My voice students ranged from young beginning singers just learning the basics of singing to seniors in undergrad preparing large roles.
