For beginners and young children, I generally demonstrate and have them practice breathing and certain terminology before we begin singing. Once we begin singing, I use the keyboard and have them practice matching pitch. We then do warm ups, and I teach them a couple phrases that will help with pronunciation and shaping their mouths to make certain sounds. My teaching experience dates back to high school years, as I began teaching private lessons outside of school for ages 8-14 7 years ago. Junior year of high school I transitioned to giving group lessons for the music students in my school district. I have been consistently teaching students for the last four years, by being invited to do workshops for students at Monmouth University, Brookdale Community College, and Long Branch High School. For younger students, I tend to focus on the production of breath and basic sounds as they begin to grow into their body. This is to ensure that the baseline technique is there as they find how their instrument, the voice, is growing into their developing selves. For adult students of any technique, I prefer to start with basic vocal exercises to test the agility and flexibility of the voice so that I have an understanding of how their matured voice functions. Practice will be assigned. Books may be read as assigned. Theory will only take you so far, so it is important you protect your voice. I also like pop, and folk music. So, if those interest you, do not let my love of a certain style deter you. If we cannot laugh I am not doing my job. With effort, and determination we can turn broken notes into sweet melodies.
