I am a creative teacher that looks and listens to the individual to help them to master the musicianship to play their instrument with the best sound and learn and apply the style of music being studied. From my yoga training I apply ideas of right alignment that help the student to play ergronomically correct. From my Suzuki training, I apply the principles of beautiful sound and learning both by ear and with music. Read More

Once we've gone through this process, I'll move on to the specific song we're working on for the purpose of performing or recording. For voice students, I take everyone through the process of warming up by using the three parts of vocal production: Breathing, Phonation, Resonance (or Tone). I always guide every voice student through each part by using specific exercises to understand the feeling of building their voice step by step. Read More

I like to create lessons in which students learn to read traditional music notation, develop technique, and play familiar tunes. I use musictheory.net to help student practice reading note names. The faster a student can read musical notation, the faster the student can pick up new pieces. To develop technique, I want students to lean scales and arpeggios. Sometimes, we use a technique book to develop muscle memory, and other times technical exercises are created based on the tricky musical passages of solo or ensemble pieces. Read More

From way back in high school when I was the lead singer in a vocal group, I've always been singing, and I can say that singing is beautiful when emitted easily and well, fine as wine most anytime: celebrating births or mourning death, mating or contemplating, closing ranks or giving thanks, praising gods or turning clods of sod, selling soap or trying to cope, making magic moments day or night -- be it a keening wail, a chant or croon, a cheery singalong or a lone moan in the darkest hour before dawn. I am a proud self-taught musician and have a great ear for music, so I love unearthing the same talents in my students. For my beginners, I feel that while practice makes perfect, Ode to Joy gets boring after the 127th time, so I focus on getting my students to learn their favorite songs that I have personally transformed into easy one-note-at-a-time melodies and work my students up to the chords, scales and modes that make up these songs.
