I began teaching voice over 5 years ago and have maintained a studio of singers varying in vocal style, age, and skill level. Each one has brought new challenges to me as a teacher and helped me home in on my teaching style and methods. If my students don't feel encouraged, practice on their own, or aren't having fun in lessons then I am not doing my job correctly! I like to find out what my student's goals are, and then I tailor the lessons to their needs. If my student is in high school and wants to apply to University for voice performance, I will make sure they start with the 26 Italian Arias, and we will also work on languages, since certain Universities require their singers to sing in French, Italian, German, English, and Spanish. If I have a student who wants to sing in musicals, we will work on show tunes and classic music theater music, but also classical music, as that is the foundation to all singing. Read More

When teaching strings to beginners I tend to teach out of a string methods book but I also offer stylistic direction outside of the book. I find this method helps the student with dependency of string books and helps to harbor curiosity to the vast world of music and methods beyond one book. I believe strongly in cross training and giving my students the tools and resources needed to practice on their own and assess their own voice in order to improve more efficiently and quickly. My main goal as a teacher is to help my students sing in whatever genre they are interested in with their true, natural voice in a healthy way that allows longevity. For beginning level students of any age, I will begin lessons by going over basic fundamentals of sheet music reading (notation, connecting the instrument to the literature) and music theory that will aid them in accomplishing homework tasks independently. For experienced students, I will ask the student to demonstrate knowledge and playing to their best ability to obtain a better understanding of where to continue their studies. I will also ask all students what kind of music they are already studying and what else they would like to pick up from there (studying classical contemporary for school band with an interest in starting jazz music, etc.) I will always consider the students age and playing level to appropriately create lesson plans that will ensure growth over time.
