I was classically trained at Point Park University's Conservatory of Performing Arts, majoring in musical theatre. When teaching both voice and piano I find music literacy vital. In younger students first developing aural skills, I like to sing and repeat tonal and rhythmic patterns. I also give handout assignments to learn notes on the staff. With older and more experienced students, I devote time in each lesson to sight reading and sight singing. Whenever I give a student a critique, I always begin by saying something positive they did. Then I explain the critique and how they can improve the next time. I want my students to feel like they have accomplished something, while knowing that there is always room for improvement. Positive reinforcement always keep the students motivated.
