My approach is always to encourage a student to stop using language like that was bad or that sucked. Its not the best or most productive way of getting you freer and singing with less tension or nerves. What I look to motivate in a student is becoming aware of any tension or nerves and explore where it comes from. Become an analyst. I started teaching voice while at Purchase College and then focused on performing and writing, and came back to teaching last year. I use the techniques I've learned from my vocal teachers along the way, as long as my own ideas and perspectives on healthy, correct ways to sing your best. I believe in acquiring a global understanding through a multiplicity of styles. Jazz and classical are my points of departure and then I incorporate different material as you develop your skills. I have several method books that I use including "Mastering Piano Technique", "Manual of Scales and Arpeggios", "The Jazz Theory Book" and "Harmony and Theory" by Keith Wyatt to name a few. For beginning piano students, I typically start with the Hal Leonard "My First Piano Adventure for the Young Beginner," series. As students progress in their piano studies, I begin introducing solo repertoire that will support the concepts being learned in the book series. I will also assign small writing projects from time to time, to sharpen students' compositional and music reading skills.
