I have been teaching voice for over 10 years. Since I had a passion for teaching I decided to go back to school to obtain my Masters and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees. While I was in school I had a graduate assistantship and taught voice elective students and musical theatre freshmen. I also had my own private studio while I was in school. I focus on indvidualizing the lesson to the student. Every student has different goals, dreams, and personalities. I typically use the Faber Books for piano, Hal Leonard for guitar and ukulele, and I work in sight-reading with my voice students. I also work in music theory when appropriate, and enjoy explaining the "why" behind how music works. I'm also a singer-songwriter and have tunes on Spotify Apple Music. For beginning piano students I typically start with Faber's piano adventure series--I typically have students work through the lesson, performance, and theory books while providing them with additional repertoire on the side (pop, disney, classical pieces etc.) For voice students, I typically spend about a third of the lesson working on technique--proper breathing, posture, extending range, working on tone quality etc. Then the rest of the lesson is spent working on solo song repertoire. I am familiar with many different series of method books (Faber, Bastien, Piano Town, Thompson, etc.), but will determine what the student needs based on their age and how much they know about music in general. Some school-aged children may have been exposed to music classes before they come to me. I am happy to hear about any school district that has chosen not to cut music education from its curriculum! I create custom lesson plans for each student, for unlike the trombone or the cello, everyone's voice is considerably different. I will first hear the students goals, and where they want to go, or what they want to do.
