I always begin a lesson with having the student play a song/piece of their choice, so that they can feel confident and comfortable in their own skin and in the lesson space. For wind instruments, long tones and scales will occur at the beginning of the lesson, and will be followed by study of an etude and/or piece of repertoire. I will ask the student to sing through the piece, so that the student can make a connection with their own voice and with the music, followed by the student reading through the piece with their instrument. My name is Courtney and I am a recent college graduate of Hofstra University with a Bachelor of Science degree in vocal performance and a minor in musical theater. While my major primarily concentrated on opera, I specialize in classical, musical theater, and pop singing. I work with the student and their needs. I don't want to jump too far ahead or go to slow , so I work with the student and figure out their speed to determine where we go each and every lesson. I believe in being honest with how you are feeling in that moment and encourage my students to utile those emotions for singing. I work with the student to make realistic goals but will push the students further and harder unless they tell me to bring it down. Read More
