I started teaching voice while at Millikin University. My first job teaching upon graduating was at the Schaumburg Academy of Music, where I taught children through adults. Other schools I taught at include Dancenter North in Libertyville, and Montessori of Hoffman Estates. My teaching style is basically giving personalized voice lessons to each student according to their goals and musical interests. I will customize each lesson according to this common ground. I usually will spend 50% of the lesson in vocal technique and the other 50% applying the vocal technique to the repertoire the student is working on. Sometimes this will vary according to the specific needs of the student. Their might be for example a deadline to prepare for an audition, or to perform in a recording, so we might warm up the voice in that case and go directly to working on the repertoire. Read More

I spend about a third of the lesson on specific technique work and I always encourage students to bring in their own material that we can work on as well. I believe in giving the student considerable freedom in choosing music that will not only benefit them technically, but inspire them. The first few lessons are spent in assessing the students voice: range, voice type, technical strengths and weaknesses,etc. The new student is also encouraged to bring in some music they already know.
