For beginning students who are children, I typically start the first day with allowing them to perform what they have learned prior so that I can see where their strengths and weaknesses are. Afterwards, I will work on their strengths so that they feel confident to tackle on their weaknesses. Once the student has progressed in fundamentals, I will advance them to solo repertoires appropriate for their performances. My approach as a teacher is to see what the voice is already doing and improve on the foundation that we already have. All music-making is positive music-making. My students love that I laugh and chat with them during our lessons. I primarily teach Musical theater and characterization, but I can also teach classical music and diction (languages). I believe that style, voice phenomenons, language/diction, artistic innovation, decision-making, characterization, and active choice-making are the best ways to get someone to make great music. In my lessons the most important thing to relax, have fun and express yourself. I let students pick which song they like and let them add a piece of their vision of the song. Some of the highlights included Ado Annie in Oklahoma and the soloist for “Get all Excited” in Godspell. I also participated in local theater groups in Pennsylvania such as Civil Theater in Allentown, Pennsylvania Playhouse in Bethlehem and The Barn Playhouse in Norristown, Pa.. This experience prepared me for my next adventure; auditioning for Wagner College in New York as a theater major.
