Hi, my name is Marianne! I graduated from Garden City Community College in 2011 with an Associate of Arts degree in Piano. From there I transferred to Southwestern Adventist University where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Sciences and minored in Vocal Music. When I first started teaching in college I used standardized materials and found it was helpful but inadequate to teach everything my students needed. So I began to explore other curriculum and attend the NAMM conventions and talk with other instructors. I saw there was a need for more expanded materials and started writing my own. I believe that practice is the most essential part of learning piano and so many lessons are spent teaching effective practicing techniques that will prevent disinterest or burnout from making music. While my teaching style is relaxed, I expect each student to always be doing their very best. I desire to work with the parent and student to create a curriculum and set of goals for the student based on their individual skill set and work ethic. Read More

I always start by asking the student if he/she has any goals or upcoming performances they'd like to concentrate on.  If so, we focus mainly on that goal, while also incorporating vocal exercises and other methods to continually improve the voice.  Otherwise, we will start with mainly vocal exercises (which will grow in difficulty as we master the easier ones), and after a few weeks, start applying what we've learned in the exercises to some songs (usually folk songs, art songs, Broadway, occasionally some opera). My teaching experience started in High School when I would exchange piano lessons for guitar with a musician friend of mine. My formal teaching experience began in Atlanta 5 years ago when I co-taught group keyboard lessons for beginner elementary school students and taught adult beginner voice students through my in-home studio. I took this experience back to my home town of Iowa City where I traveled to teach beginner adult piano and beginner adult voice and taught beginner-early intermediate piano and voice through a local music lessons studio. I believe each student has unique gifts. I love watching my students thrive by encouraging self-exploration as we learn about music. If a student loves playing by ear, we seek knowledge of composition more, if they are inspired to play Star Wars, we add that to the repertoire. If a good solid foundation is built through the sequential lesson books along with motivating material, retention is higher. Encouragement of progression at his or her own pace by understanding each students gifts, along with realistic goals and practice, aids in well rounded musicians. Read More
