Coming from the struggling yet revolutionary country of Lebanon, I have found healing in expression and performance. I am a very kinesthetic teacher. We move around the room a lot during lessons because piano, flute, and voice should be an extension of music that is first heard in the mind (inner hearing/audiation), so note playing/singing is not merely a muscle memory. We sing, tap, or clap 90% of music we learn before we attempt to play it on an instrument or sing it resonantly. Thinking through a vocal line and anticipating the high notes and the openness needed in the body/throat and the breath support needed will help the student discover an unknown freedom and give them tools to help transfer this into other songs. I am a Classical linguist turned Vocal Performer and choral conductor who believes that active participation in music improves quality of life for all ages. This belief comes from a life-time of musical learning and performance spanning violin lessons at the age of 4 all the way to singing on stage with the Cleveland Orchestra, Akron Symphony, Canton Symphony, and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestras to name a few, as well as a paid vocalist with many fine choral ensembles in the NE Ohio area, including the Summit Choral Society Masterworks Chorale, the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus, Akron Symphony Chorus, and the Cleveland Singers' Club of the Western Reserve Chorale. As mentioned my teaching methods are as follows. Beginners in Piano - Scales, proper fingering positions and usage, posture and accurate knowledge of reading music. Beginners in Drums - Proper usage of drumsticks, demonstrate the two postions of holding the drumstick, knowledge of basic rhythm patterns, proper height and angle of drum or practice pad, and most importantly, the study of the 26 standard drum rudiments for proper playing developiment. Vocal Techniques: Proper breathing support, demonstrating the difference between using the breath and using the throat when singing, encourage student to record their lessons for accurate practice and knowledge of hearing themselves sing, (approved by student's preference). My teaching style is straightforward and practical, always emphasizing the goals of each student specifically. The benefits of reading and understanding sheet music as it relates to your instrument far outweigh those of simple tablature used for guitar and banjo etc. However, in some cases it is practical to use non-traditional forms of instruction.
