My teaching philosophy emphasizes and promotes that the student has fun and develops a love for music and the instrument that they play. The way that I do this is by placing an emphasis on music the student enjoys, and by giving the student a fair amount of autonomy in choosing their repertoire they would like to learn. For beginners or people that are brand new to the guitar we typically break the lesson into halves. The first half is typically practicing pentatonic scales and basic finger exercises and maybe some rhythm drills before moving onto simplified versions of famous classic songs. I encourage the student to feel free and not to be afraid of mistakes, as mistakes will teach the student what sounds and feels like a mistake. Having the opportunity to play with someone without judgement is something every beginning student needs. When a child is learning to speak, we don't chastise them for poor sentence formation.
