A total beginner will usually start by learning chord progressions that are specifically in a major scale progression (ex. C-Dm-Em-F-G-Am-Bdim). Using chord progressions allows my students to grow accustomed to the feel of the guitar and the fundamental hand strength needed to play, as well as the finger dexterity needed to play certain chords. This fundamental also introduces them to major scales, and the sound of chord progressions in the major scale. Read More

I tailor my lesson to each student, everyone has a different way of learning and interpreting the crazy world of music. For beginning students we start with the basics, how to hold a pick, how to tune your guitar and basic fretting technique. From there we go into the basic fundamentals of chords and scales. I always try to use example from the students favorite music, and teach this theory through learning their favorite songs. Read More

For beginners just learning how to play their instrument, I start with exercises from an assortment of beginner books as well as teaching the fundamentals of scales, and basic chords which would give them the grasp on the music they want to learn. For students of all levels I basically care about finding what the student is interested in and building upon their tastes. I find that the most important thing is keeping the student engaged by being interested in not only the music itself but also the practice and routine. Read More

Though each student gets a lesson plan that is catered to their individual needs, I start everyone off with these three questions: Which musical artists do you listen do? What do you like about their music? What are your goals with taking lessons? I use this information to teach the student how to play some of their favorite songs, how to write similar music, and how to use my lessons as a means of achieving their musical goals I have found that doing so results in faster results, and increased motivation. I truly enjoy seeing each of my students develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation for music. I believe each student must be taught in a way that allows them to grow and develop at their own pace, and without feeling overwhelmed. Through positive praise and personal accomplishments a student's desire to progress fuels their motivation. By working closely with each student, I find their inspirations and tailor my instruction to their needs. Read More

For beginning students I prefer to use either Alfred's, Mel Bay, or Hal Leonard method books. I generally stay away from method books that use guitar tablature because I find that student will prefer to read the tablature instead of standard musical notation. Tablature is a good way to easily show how guitar parts are played, but is not useful when teaching standard notation, music theory, harmony, etc. In addition to using a method book, I will also teach the student popular songs, which is a great way to start teaching chords and song structure in addition to keeping the lesson fun and the student engaged. Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
