If there's a particular method book the student and/or parent want to use, they're the boss. If not or addition to, I simply teach HOW to play the instrument. I show them how to hold it, wrist/elbow positions and muscle memory techniques which are very important early on so bad habits don't develop to where they're playing the instrument versus fighting it. This is something I do with every new student regardless of their level, because they sought out a teacher for a very good reason. Read More

I have been teaching privately since 2006. I specialize in jazz drum set, but I can teach all sorts of styles of music as well. In addition to drum set, I teach rudimental, marching and classical snare drum, classical percussion (mallets, timpani), afro-cuban percussion (congas, bongos, timbales), sight reading, music theory, and beginning piano. I also have experience teaching high school drumlines, as well as jazz and rock bands for middle school and high school students. Read More

Acknowledging and celebrating a student's accomplishments is a crucial aspect of my teaching philosophy. Whether it's mastering a challenging piece, understanding a complex musical concept, or simply showing dedication and improvement, every achievement deserves recognition. The positive reinforcement from such acknowledgment serves as a powerful motivator for students. It stokes their desire to continue progressing and inspires them to delve deeper into the world of music. Watching their self-confidence grow with each accomplishment is, without a doubt, one of the most rewarding aspects of being a music teacher. Read More

Everybody is different, and everyone responds to different types of motivation. As a teacher it is part of my job to find out what that is for each student. I believe that success breeds success, and starting with achieveable goals and realizing results will motivate and inspire a student, but there is also no getting around practice, you must put in the time on your instrument to be successful and to progress. My teaching experience dates back to my high school days. I began giving guitar lessons to some younger kids in my hometown. As my own musical ability grew, I began teaching lessons on upright and electric bass as well. In addition to one-on-one lessons I teach at a summer music camp. I lead theory and improvisation classes, as well as coach the camp's jazz ensemble. It's always the highlight of my summers! Read More

Setting realistic goals is definitely a good place to start. Also, I encourage transcribing music in small sections, and to always start slow and take deep breaths, as this will reduce the student's normal anxiety and has done wonders in my own playing as well. Using a rhythm reference like a metronome or a drum loop while practicing is also a must, at it helps develop the student's groove. Internalizing music by developing the student's ear is also a very important part of my teaching style as Is applicable in any genre (hear it before you play it!) Read More
