I began teaching in 2012 when I was awarded the Graduate Assistant position at Western Michigan University. As a G.A., I was responsible for teaching non-music majors saxophone lessons, theory and ear-training, as well as coaching ensembles. I also taught flute and clarinet at Paramount Charter Academy in Kalamazoo, Michigan to middle school students. I do not subscribe to a specific style of/approach to teaching. I try to ascertain what a student hopes to accomplish when possible and plot a path toward achieving that end. The goal is to make and share music. To that end, it is fair to say that some aspects of musicianship cannot be ignored. Development of technique, the ear rhythm would of the most primary importance. I usually take the first lesson to gauge what the student wants from learning their specific instrument. If they want to learn a specific song, if they want to get better at a certain genre, or if they just want something to do as a hobby! I believe it is counterproductive to force a certain system or lesson series that the student is not interested in.
