The way i approach sharing knowledge with students is to present materials and concepts and then set about "right-sizing" the tasks based on each student's individual needs. Anything we want to play can be broken down into its component parts and we work to gain mastery of each element. It doesn't matter how small we make the task if we are progressing! Something may seem difficult, but we find the right way of working on it and we're off and running. Read More

I have been an active drummer and musician in the New York City area since graduating from Berklee College of Music in 2009, where I received my Bachelor's Degree. I am currently undergoing my masters at Queens College as well. My experiences range from performing in monks' homes in Japan, music festivals in South America, club dates all around the USA and Canada, as well as recording sessions and leading workshops in Europe and the Caribbean. My pedagogy is based on the American jazz tradition and the teachings of Orff and Kodaly. I like to impart a holistic love of music in my students, without boring them with too much history or theory. However, it is my belief that theory and musical literacy will open doors to a greater level of fulfillment and understanding of music as a whole. The materials I use vary from student to student and from instrument to instrument, depending on each student's goals and progress. Read More

You can learn so much about a student in a 30 minute trial lesson! If a new student is not a total beginner, I will ask them to play their favorite song (or one of their favorites if they have trouble choosing just one). After their performance, I ask them what they liked about how they played. Its important for students to always be aware of what they do well. If they arent able to see their strengths on their own then I share with them what I think their strengths are and encourage them to keep that up. Read More

My teaching style is based on having fun and enjoying music. I work with my students to set goals and reach them. I use my song based approach to encourage my students because one of the main reasons one picks up an instrument is to be able to recreate the music they love most. By doing this I can cater to my students' needs and desires as musicians. Read More

I generally begin with Alfred's Guitar Method for very young students or adult students who are interested in learning the rudiments of music. For intermediate students we work on polishing technique. I also use the Royal College of Music series for young students who are interested in taking the ABRSM placement exam. I have adult students who also want to learn songs they enjoy listening to, so we work with tablature (numbers). Read More

Having studied guitar formally for 4 years at Berklee, I pull from materials that I found most helpful to me during my own education. These include scales, chords, modes, picking patterns and even solos. Aside from fundamentals and exercises, my favorite method of teaching is asking a student what they want to learn, a song they enjoy for example, and doing my best to teach the student how to play it and why it works from a harmonic perspective.
