For beginning students I like to focus attention on fundamental technique on both hands, making sure that they use the correct finger positioning on the bass. As they advance, the student will begin to know the whole fretboard through scales and arpeggios (in all keys) so the student knows where all the notes are in the instrument. That being said, there are students that don't want to learn to read and I understand that as well. For those students there are many methods available that can help them achieve what they want.
