As soon as I meet with a student or a group of students, I make sure they are welcomed by an energetic teacher before getting started on their lesson. I try to keep the student(s) engaged by showing them different ways and approaches to music from books and my own personal approaches to help them grow knowing their teacher is well experienced. Since their is a lot for a percussionist than just playing with sticks on a drum, there is no doubt that the endless possibilities in teaching students the various instruments will help keep them engaged as well being more excited about music. I do enjoy teaching out of books, especially younger children. It gives a visual to emphasize what I am teaching. A lot of the books I use are from Hal Leonard, but then I also have custom exercises for all different genres of music. Younger students, I tend to teach reading music with single notes as it is easier on the hands. It then creates an avenue to introduce basic music theory concepts. Read More

I strongly believe that a well-rounded music education helps a player to become a more confident, musical, and an emotionallyyaware musician. As such, I like to give my students small assignments focused on topics besides just performance, such as Music Theory and Aural Skills exercises. Of course, I will always move at the pace the student needs but I also know (from personal experience) that a nudge in the right direction can be priceless. Read More

I try to get to know the students as best as I can. I will ask them about their interests in music and outside of music. I also will learn what their weaknesses and strengths are and push them to improve all around. I have a pretty laid back style of teaching. My goal to encourage them, rather than make them feel bad or frustrated. I will simply tell them if they are sounding good, or I will tell them what they can do to sound better. Read More

IF a bassist does not have a strong sense of rhythm, the ensemble will not work well, and the bassist will have a difficult time being able to play comfortably with a drummer. However if a student is a beginner, I will start him/her off comfortably playing the instrument. Eventually I will introduce music theory and scales, sight-reading music constructing walking baselines etc etc. If a student is more advanced, I will enforce the 4 T's I talked about and make sure to incorporate what he/she wishes to work on or learn. I began studying piano when I was 6 years old and developed a passion for music from a young age. I'm a graduate of the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley CA (B.M., 16) where my teachers included Benny Green, Peter Horvath and Art Lande. In 2011 I began teachingpiano and guitar lessons to children and adults in the San Fransisco Bay Area. In addition, I led andaccompanied workshops for vocalists and instrumentalists at the California Jazz Conservatory while performingextensivelythroughout the region in Jazz, Blues, Rock, RB and Pop groups. I use methods I learned from my studies at CSULA and my personal experience over the years and learning various instruments and rehearing and performing with people from different age groups. Everyone can teach you something, it doesnt matter their age, a persons drive, discipline and curiosity will learn and can show others. When it comes to kids I am more about the basics and literal but with older kids and adults it is different because we understand feel and groove and dynamics which translates to different words.
