For young children I usually use the Suzuki method books for song selection and through those we can focus on the basic fundamentals of positioning and technical development. It is easy to see what needs to be addressed through those first few songs and we can go from there. I am able to use many resources and teaching material from many of the great teachers I have studied with. Being a Berklee graduate I use a lot of their teaching materials, from the Harmony 1- 4 books plus the arranging books, and many exercises to build up your technique and harmony knowledge so you can compose your own bass lines to any style. My methods all depend on the students' needs and/or wishes; one lesson plan/method does not necessarily fit all students. Especially with adult students I think it is essential to cater to the students' goal. If this involves the need to learn certain techniques, requires knowledge of music theory or the ability to read music, I will advise the student so. From there we can set up a lesson plan and practice schedule that creates a path towards obtaining the students' original goals. Read More
