For beginning woodwind students, I have had success using the Rubank method books as a starter. Alongside a method book, I like to work on material chosen by the student, as well as my own supplemntal exercises. It is important for the student to understand the musical concepts associated with the repertoire, as well as focusing on performing well. I also prefer to have my students keep a practice log book, in order to track their progress. For piano and music theory, I like to use the John Thompson method for beginner students, and the Bastien Piano Literature series for more advanced students. Read More

I encourage my students to learn at their own pace and push them when I see I can. I do not want to deter my students from liking what they do. I try to find the passion for a style of music and bring it out in my students while connecting that style to other styles to show the student that styles are idiosynchratic, but that they can also interchange with other styles. I'm a guitarist currently based out of Bridgewater, New Jersey with 10+ years of experience, currently looking to begin a career as a guitar teacher. A guitar hobbyist since my teen years, I recently graduated from Drew University of a Bachelor of Arts degree in music. While at Drew, I also performed in the Jazz Ensemble, which greatly honed my skills in harmony, rhythm, and improvisation as well as greatly expanded my musical palette, and performed on campus at least once a semester. While students arrive to my lessons with an array of different skills, I always make sure they have the fundamentals of music down; such as keeping a consistent rhythm and ensuring the notes choices are harmonically pleasing and intentional based on the piece. Making sure the student is learning what they enjoy learning as well as what I feel are the necessary next steps to improve their skills are essential in the learning process no matter what age the student is. While some teachers may be very strict or hard on their students, I try to take a more inviting approach. I like to cultivate an atmosphere of openness and encouragement, but I do also believe it is important to maintain focus and make sure students are practicing sufficiently. I believe that at least a basic understand of music theory is important for learning any instrument, so from time to time we will discuss theory in relation to the bass. Read More

For a beginning student on guitar, I have them learning notes from a Hal Leonard, Mel Bay, or Alfred starter book. All these books are great, but I believe it depends on the individual student and how they learn. I also teach tab to beginners. I feel it is important to read tabs these days as well as notes. I also work with music theory. It is also important to know what you are doing, not just putting your fingers on the strings. Read More
