I encourage this by setting realistic goals and providing appropriate music for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. My teaching is strongly influenced by the Suzuki method and the teaching methods of Mimi Zweig and Susan Moses. I incorporate Dalcroze Eurhythmics and general music theory and ear training into each lesson. I believe that learning to play an instrument should be fun and enjoyable, while simultaneously stretching a childs musical imagination and growing their cello technique. For beginners, I always reincorporate very crucial skills to possess with constant repetition (i.e.: intonation, posture, bow technique, finger positioning). On top of this, I build on rhythm. Many times, parts of my lessons include simply clapping, so that students get a grasp for rhythm and constantly improve upon it. In terms of classical training, for me, knowing the "feeling" of the piece is key. By building upon this feeling, I introduce different styles and different techniques that the student can learn. I am a former Suzuki student--I began at age 3.5 with my mom as my teacher--so I believe that Suzuki is an incredible method for teaching young string players. The aural memory I attained by learning this way still continues to benefit me in my career each and every day! During the first lesson, I have a short discussion with the student to see what their goals are. I also ask what about music interests them. I then ask them to perform anything of their choice to assess their ability level (if applicable). After that, I tell them what immediately needs to be addressed and how this will work with their longterm goal. I offer the option for students to send me practice progress videos during the week so that I may comment on any questions that may arise in between lessons. I have found that this pushes students to keep a regular practice routine, and also develops their ability to self-critique and correct their own playing.
