The first thing I do when teaching a student is to learn what musical goals and aspirations the student may have. Then, depending on age and experience, I build a custom program for the student, which may include using various books, resources, and even materials which I have created. My lessons are structured with attention paid to the fundamentals of each instrument and the fundamentals of music. I have learned that when a student practices a mistake over and over it remains a mistake. I immediately slow the student down and concentrate on just a measure or even two notes to accomplish correct rhythm, fingerings, articulations and phrasing. I taught a little in Idaho but really started teaching in earnest when I moved to Colorado. I've taught individuals from the young beginner to the older person looking to relearn a lost art. I have also adjudicated and taught masterclasses. I've found a passion for working with others that I didn't know that I had.
