Otherwise, I will start with the beginning Rubank method book, and move through books containing etudes and exercises of increasing difficulty. In addition to working with Musika, I also act as a classroom aide for after-school music programs for several schools in the DC Metro Area. I am often not the only teacher in the classroom, which means that I can give each student the attention that they deserve. In large group classes, it is easy for a child to feel left out, but I feel that it is important to give them as much individual attention as I can offer, especially when a student is excited about something that they have learned and are eager to show me what they can do. For beginning students who are children, I usually start with a songbook, such as the Accent on Achievement method book. Once the student has a grasp on the fundamentals, I begin to introduce solo repertoire. For adult students, I try to find out what the student is interested in pursuing, and then if they are a beginner, I teach fundamentals through the Rubank method books and supplement with songs that are approapriate to the student's taste.
